Great Subaru Slogan - Think. Feel. Drive.
Subaru is a Japan based automaker that offers vehicles that are both practical and fun to drive. A collection of Japanese companies joined to form Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd in the early 1950s and the automotive division was named Subaru. The Japanese meaning for Subaru is "unite". Subaru offers sharp performance, versatility for use as a family car and boasts some of the best crash test scores in the automotive world.
The First Subaru is Unveiled
In 1954, the first Subaru car known as the P1 was unveiled. The P1 was later called the Subaru 1500 and boasted a front wheel wishbone-type independent suspension. There were some challenges with funding and support early on which suspended sales but Subaru quickly resolved those issues and introduced the 360 model by 1958. The Ladybird as it was affectionately known become very popular and remained in production for 12 years.
Subaru Truck Arrives
In the 1960s Subaru launched the Sambar mini truck. It offered both compact dimensions as well as a very spacious cargo bed. Subaru also introduced the Sambar Light Van which was built for both commercial and leisure use. In 1966 Subaru rolled out the 1000. The 1000 was the first car to use the drive technology that current Subaru models are known for. It offered a front wheel drive system coupled to a horizontally opposed engine. By the end of the 1960's Subaru began exporting to the United States and Subaru North America was founded.
The 1970s and Beyond
The DL/GL model was introduced in the early '70s. First produced as a sedan, a coupe and station wagon version quickly followed. These models offered 4WD, something previously only offered in off-road oriented vehicles. This quickly made these models widely popular for use in snow and hilly regions. It benefited from the increasing popularity of outdoor sports such as skiing and fishing in turn making it the top selling 4WD vehicle. In the 80's the Legacy replaced the DL/GL model. Still available as a sedan or wagon the Legacy place emphasis on performance.
Subaru's lineup today includes everything from compact trucks to family wagons and high performance cars like the WRX STi. Subaru is a top pick for those seeking vehicles offering utility along with performance.
